This is a change over the past 10+ years. Within Cognita, we now think of the global Cognita community as a system.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db82385 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db82385\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>Cognita as a system<\/strong><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-31b62f9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"31b62f9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In its early life, Cognita was considered a\u00a0<strong>group of schools<\/strong>. Our 2016 strategic framework reconceptualised Cognita as a\u00a0<strong>schools group<\/strong>. There are three elements to our Framework.<\/p><ol><li>Our\u00a0<strong>global purpose<\/strong>\u00a0enables our students and colleagues to \u2018Thrive in a rapidly evolving world\u2019. This is our North Star.<\/li><li>Our four\u00a0<strong>strategic pillars<\/strong>: Holistic Education, Leadership, Operational Excellence and Growth. These pillars are the work of our schools.<\/li><li>Our three\u00a0<strong>system capabilities<\/strong>: Intelligent Accountability, Knowledge Animation and Building Capacity. This is a very frequent conversation when someone moves from a school role into a regional or group role. I have learned, over time, that whilst some leadership competencies and skills are generic; others are more situational or context specific. This has helped me understand why some people do not enjoy or flourish when they move from a school or institutional leadership role into a system role.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>It is 20 years since I first worked in a system leadership role. Over this time I have learned from some talented colleagues. Like most learning, you learn what to do as well as what not to do. These are a few lessons from my work as a systems leader.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1b44914 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1b44914\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f316f17\" data-id=\"f316f17\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e27dd8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e27dd8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong><em>Ambiguity<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51e9ef1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"51e9ef1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In a system leadership role,\u00a0<strong>ambiguity is everywhere<\/strong>. You are often dealing with a partial picture; often accompanied by complex reporting and organisational structures. Whilst this is common in many leadership roles, my own experience is that this is dialled up when in system leadership role vs institutional leadership role. Indeed, I have seen some amazing people flounder as system leaders and it is often because they struggle with the ambiguity and not being the positional leader.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6ae0baf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6ae0baf\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3448afc\" data-id=\"3448afc\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-977ef99 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"977ef99\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong><em>Influence<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0aaa4d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0aaa4d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Influence is, for me, at the heart of leadership. But influence can be non-tangible and nuanced. There are\u00a0<strong>many ways to influence<\/strong>\u00a0others and we all need to find our own way with this. For me, influence is closely connected with knowing your colleagues and your audience. I intentionally aim to influence people in different ways, knowing that there is\u00a0<strong>no one-size-fits all<\/strong>\u00a0approach. There are two broad types of influence:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Transactional influence is often used in top-down, hierarchical organizations and is focused on the tasks to be done. This kind of leader is often direct and to the point.<\/li><li>Transformational influence is rooted in empathy and is often seen in more flat organizations. This kind of leader relies on encouragement and support to motivate and inspire others.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>I guess there are occasional times when transactional influence may be of use. Overall, the second type of influence is needed for sustained impact. The ultimate internal question I ask myself is \u2018will I have helped impact thinking and change\u2019 beyond me being here? In conversation with my great colleague David Baldwin in Dubai, he likened this to a kingfisher bird that can hover, dive into the water and exit from the water almost as quickly. As a system leader you often need to \u2018dive down\u2019 into the system to test out facts or assertions.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>A key skill here is being able to get yourself out of the detail and back to big picture. I have seen system leaders \u2018dive in\u2019 and stay. This is either because getting out was difficult or they were in their comfort zone. My own learning is that staying in the system doesn\u2019t ultimately develop the system as a whole.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8fb5983 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8fb5983\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-52fac01\" data-id=\"52fac01\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96d7289 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"96d7289\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong><em>Trust<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4eccd91 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4eccd91\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It may be obvious, but everything about system leadership is built on trust. No trust equals limited impact. We live in a world that is rapidly changing. There is something comforting about the fact that most things can be done more quickly using technology but trust is something that transcends this. There are\u00a0<strong>rarely shortcuts to building trust<\/strong>. This is nicely summed up by the Dutch proverb:<\/p><p><em>\u2018Trust arrives on foot and leaves on horseback\u2019.<\/em><\/p><p>Trust is built by investing in people, believing in them and supporting them.
