How can you slow down to see things clearly and savor them more?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3><p><em>One way is to take inspiration from calming rituals and traditions found across the world. If you\u2019ve already mastered the Spanish\u00a0<\/em>siesta<em>\u00a0\u2014 aka\u00a0the midday nap\u00a0\u2014 what other practices can you build into your life?\u00a0<\/em><\/p><ol><li><h4><strong> Shinrin yoku<\/strong><\/h4><\/li><\/ol><p>Eco-therapy. Green time. Wilderness cure. Whatever name you hang on it, spending time in nature is a wonderful way to slow down.<\/p><p>It makes you calmer, happier and less stressed.\u00a0It boosts memory, creativity and concentration. It can also deepen friendships.<\/p><p>In Japan, spending time in nature is called\u00a0<em>shinrin yoku<\/em>\u00a0(\u201cforest bathing\u201d) \u2014 and Japanese doctors prescribe it to their patients.<\/p><p>I prescribe it to myself. My favorite way to reset is to stroll around the park near my home in London.<\/p><p><em>Shinrin yoku<\/em>\u00a0is easy to do: Just head to the nearest green space and start\u00a0walking, picnicking, camping, gardening.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><h4><strong> Fika<\/strong><\/h4><\/li><\/ol><p>The Swedish word\u00a0<em>fika<\/em>\u00a0translates as \u201ccoffee and cake break,\u201d yet it means so much more than that.\u00a0<em>Fika<\/em>\u00a0is a mindset: slowing down, being present, savoring the moment.<\/p><p>Forget slurping a latte while walking down the street and using your phone. When you\u00a0<em>fika<\/em>, you put away the screens and sit down somewhere cozy. You sip your coffee (or your drink of choice). You nibble on a delicious cake or cookie. And you enjoy a proper chat with someone.<\/p><p>You can\u00a0<em>fika<\/em>\u00a0anytime, anywhere. Do it with a friend over homemade muffins in your own kitchen. Or head to a coffee shop to shoot the breeze over pastries with a colleague.<\/p><p><em>Fika<\/em>\u00a0is so uplifting that regular fika breaks are written into some job contracts in Sweden.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><h4><strong> Slow Radio<\/strong><\/h4><\/li><\/ol><p>A rich soundscape can transport you anywhere and offer refuge from the frenzy of modern life. That\u2019s why I love\u00a0Slow Radio on the BBC.<\/p><p>I listen to elephants wallowing in Zimbabwe, birds singing in Buenos Aires or a small boat navigating<\/p><p>down the Thames River in London. The sounds are deep, immersive and soothing.<\/p><p>Slow Radio is free online. Just slip on some headphones, hit \u201cplay\u201d and let a symphony of slowness wash over you.<\/p><ol start=\"4\"><li><h4><strong> Ubuntu<\/strong><\/h4><\/li><\/ol><p>One of my favorite proverbs is: \u201cIf you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.\u201d<\/p><p>It\u2019s a reminder that a slower life is\u00a0built on strong relationships. That spirit is captured by the word\u00a0<em>ubuntu<\/em>, which means \u201cI am because we are\u201d in the Zulu and Xhosa languages of southern Africa.<\/p><p>You channel\u00a0<em>ubuntu<\/em>\u00a0by being kind, generous and compassionate. Being of service. Building community.<\/p><p>I practice\u00a0<em>ubuntu<\/em>\u00a0by committing random acts of kindness. Like bantering with the cashier at the supermarket. Or helping a vulnerable person cross the road.<\/p><ol start=\"5\"><li><h4><strong> Dolce far niente<\/strong><\/h4><\/li><\/ol><p>In a world terrified of wasting time, doing nothing feels like a crime or a sin.<\/p><p>I\u2019m here to say: It is neither! Because idleness is an art form.<\/p><p>It offers sweet relief from the daily grind and the relentless pressure to achieve, and Italians call it\u00a0<em>il dolce far niente<\/em>.<\/p><p>Trust me: Once you get over the guilt, doing nothing is actually very easy. Put down tools, turn off your phone, stop striving and then \u2026 sink into the moment.<\/p><p>Lie in the grass or gaze out the window and let your mind wander. Pretty soon you\u2019ll be singing the praises of living more by doing less.<\/p><ol start=\"6\"><li><h4><strong> Indian head massage<\/strong><\/h4><\/li><\/ol><p>Massaging the head has been a tool of Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. And no wonder.<\/p><p>Whatever your view on chakras, a good head massage has been shown to relieve stress and headaches as well as kickstart the lymphatic system. It can leave you feeling relaxed and better able to concentrate.<\/p><p>A head massage from an expert is the ultimate luxury. But you can also go the DIY route. Place three fingers at the point where your neck joins your head just behind the ear. Then rub your fingers back and forth.
